Signature Gathering Procedures
Logistics
- A good opening line is "Are you registered to vote in the City of Vallejo?" (Yes). We are asking Vallejo voters to sign this petition that considers removing binding arbitration from the Vallejo Charter.
- Set up tables 20 feet away from entrance/exit doors
- Do not solicit shoppers entering the store, only solicit shoppers as they exit
- Some locations do not allow more than a certain number of people. Do not ask folks to participate other than those who are scheduled
- Some stores require check in (and sometimes complete a form) before starting the signature collection. Point people will be given this information and other store specifics ahead of time.
- If you want to sit, bring your own chair
- Wear sunscreen and a hat
Conduct at the Stores
- Avoid arguments, be polite at all times. The stores reserve their right to tell people to leave if signature gathering activity becomes disruptive
- Don’t be distracted by stories and/or arguments to the point where you are losing signature opportunities. This is about getting a measure on November’s ballot that asks for removal of binding arbitration from Vallejo’s Charter. To do this, we need to collect as many signatures in the least amount of time.
The Legal Stuff
- Signers must be registered to vote in the City of Vallejo
- For people eligible but not registered, they can not sign until after they have sent in their registration to the Registrar of Voters (i.e. you can’t register them and then have them sign at the same time)
- Registered voters must sign their own name
- Circulators (those collecting signatures) must be registered to vote in the City of Vallejo
- Circulators (those collecting signatures) must witness each signature being written
- If people have questions, please refer them to the website. Don’t make any statements about binding arbitration or its effects that you aren’t sure are true
